Twenty Third Week Of Pregnancy

It’s week 23. Be prepared for getting comments about looking too fat and big. Till now, weight gain was fairly slow, but from now onwards, your baby will start to put on more weight.

Your baby is about the size of a large mango, this week. He or she has probably reached 1 pound mark.

  • The soft fine hair, known as Lanugo, which covers most of your baby’s body, may start to become darker and you may notice it in your ultrasound scan.
  • Your baby’s lungs are developing and he or she is practicing breathing motions.
  • Your baby’s heart is now beating more strongly and pumping more blood around his or her body.
  • At this stage, your baby is moving around more. When you go to sleep, chances are you may feel the dancing movements of your baby.
  • Now, your baby’s bone marrow has taken over the job of producing red blood cells from his or her liver and spleen.

  • Your belly continues to grow and you will continue to gain weight.
  • At the end of day, you may notice swelling in your ankles and feet due to sluggish blood circulation in your legs.
  • You may notice stretch marks on your belly, thighs, and breasts.
  • This week, your breasts may start producing colostrum (early form of breast milk).

  • Try to exercise regularly to increase circulation in your legs.
  • Wear support stockings and comfortable shoes to combat swelling.
  • Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water, juice of fresh fruits and vegetables.
  • To meet your daily calcium intake requirement, drink a glass of milk daily.
  • Keep an eye on your posture, and before sitting on a chair, make sure it is properly adjusted.
  • Keep healthy snack foods such as cheese, fresh fruits, yogurt, vegetables, peanut butter and whole grain cracker around yourself to deal with increased appetite.

If you experience following conditions, then do not hesitate to call your doctor.

  • If you experience sharp increase in blood pressure, then do not wait to call your doctor because it can be a very serious pregnancy complication. It could be a sign of pre-eclampsia.
  • Call your doctor immediately, if you notice severe or sudden swelling of your feet or ankles, more than slight swelling of your face, hands or puffiness around your eyes.
  • When you laugh or cough, you may notice a fluid leakage. This is normal but in case you experience a gush of fluid which does not smell or look like urine, then it is time to call your doctor.
