Now, you are in the final week of your first trimester. If you haven’t announced your pregnancy to your family and friends then, of course, this is the perfect time to inform them. Although your baby has changed beyond all recognition from week one, the most dramatic development takes place this week. What’s it? Reflexes!!! Let us first discuss how big is your baby now?

How big is my baby when I am 12 weeks pregnant?
At 12 weeks pregnant, your baby is about the size of an apricot. Your tiny baby is now fully formed and about 6 cm in length. He will grow larger, practice sucking and breathing movements. You are likely to see your growing baby at your dating scan for the first time this week.

  • This week, your baby is beginning to practice their reflexes. His fingers and toes will soon begin to curl, eye muscles will clench, and his mouth will make sucking movements.
  • You can’t feel your baby moving, but if you poke your stomach, your baby will squirm in response.
  • Now, his intestines, that have grown so fast, protrude into the umbilical cord and soon that will start to move into his abdominal cavity.
  • His kidneys will begin to excrete urine into his bladder.
  • Nerve cells are multiplying rapidly, and synapses are forming furiously in your baby’s brain.
  • His face now looks like a human. His eyes have moved from the sides to front of his head, and his ears are right where they should be.

  • The muscles of your stomach slow down, making your stools harder and drier.
  • Your uterus has gotten too big to fit in your pelvis. It is now pushing into your abdomen.
  • You might find your jeans are feeling a little tighter this week.
  • Because of the extra volume of blood in your body, your heart rate may speed up.
  • To make more room for your uterus to grow, your hips are widening.
  • Pregnancy symptoms such as morning sickness and fatigue may start to fade, as your pregnancy hormones start to calm down. Headaches and dizziness may replace them.
  • You will experience increased vaginal discharge.
  • You may begin to feel heartburn, a burning sensation, which often extends from the bottom of your breastbone to your lower throat.
  • You may notice brownish marks or patches on your forehead, cheeks, and chin.
  • You may find that your gums are now more sensitive and bleed when you brush or floss.
